『ラヴ・イズ (LOVE IS)』 by エリック・バードン & ジ・アニマルズ (ERIC BURDON AND THE ANIMALS)

エリック・バードン (Eric Burdon) で、ジ・アニマルズ (The Animals) と謂えば、『朝日のあたる家 (The House Of The Rising Sun)』 [アルバム『ジ・アニマルズ (The Animals)』 [1964年発表] 収録] や『朝日のない街 (We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place)』 [アルバム『アニマル・トラックス (Animal Tracks)』 [1965年発表] 収録] といった代表曲が脳裏に浮かぶだろうが、それを想定して本作品に向かうと、恐らく、絶句する。

"THE REAL FOLK BLUES" by MUDDY WATERS

この作品を購入したのは、冒頭曲『マニッシュ・ボーイ (Mannish Boy)』 [1955年発表] を聴きたかったからだ。
ザ・ローリング・ストーンズ (The Rolling Stones) がアルバム『感激! 偉大なるライヴ (Love You Live)』 [1977年発表] でカヴァーしている。そのオリジナル・ヴァージョンの感触を確かめたかったのだ。

『闘 (WAR)』 by ユー・トゥー (U2)

本作品は、「いつまでこの歌をうたいつづけなければならないのか (How Long Must We Sing This Song)」で幕が開き、「あたらしい歌をこれからもうたうだろう (I Will Sing, Sing A New Song)」と閉じられる。
前者は本作品の冒頭収録曲『ブラディ・サンデー (Sunday Bloody Sunday)』の1節であり、後者は最終楽曲『"40 ("40")"』の1節だ。

そして、このふたつのことばの連なりをどううけとめるのか、その1点でもって、本作品やそれを発表したバンドへの評価が決定される様に思える。

"THE BEST OF THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP FEATURING STEVIE WINWOOD" by THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP

ぼくが意識的に洋楽を聴く様になった時分には既に、スティーヴ・ウインウッド (Stevie Winwood) は寡作ながらも着実な歩みをみせてはいたが、肝心のぼく自身が彼の音楽に積極的に飛び込む事はなかったのだ。
その現状は現時点でも相変わらずで、彼がソロ・デヴューする前のキャリア、すなわちトラフィック (Traffic) での活動もつい最近、時系列に沿って初めて聴いたばかりだ。
にも、関わらずに、彼の最初期のキャリアである、スペンサー・デイヴィス・グループ (The Spencer Davis Group) での楽曲群を収録した本作品は随分と、聴き倒していたのである。

このコラボレーション作品の主人公ふたり、クリント・ルイン (Clint Ruin) [彼は様々な偽名変名によるプロジェクトがあるが、拙稿ではクレジット表記に準ずる] とリディア・ランチ (Lydia Lunch) の、アーティストとしての事はとりあえず棚上げして、先ずは誰もが眼を奪われるアート・ワークから。
そして恐らく、殆どそれだけに終始した内容になってしまうと思う。
